Chapter 12
As Cecilia peeled the shells off hard-boiled eggs, she glanced out the kitchen window and watched Tonya playing chase in the backyard with her children. The sound of her sisterâs laughter made her heart swell, but she controlled her tears as a sob caught in her throat.
âHey, big sis,â Vince said, walking in and placing a bag of sodas on the table and a bag of ice in the freezer. Noticing that something had Ceciliaâs total attention, he followed her glance into the backyard. âItâs a hell of a sight, isnât it?â
âHey, babe. Yeah, itâs breathtaking just to see her out there. I never thought weâd see the day.â
âCome on, now. You didnât doubt her, did you?â
âI guess seeing so many depressing and horrifying things in my line of work might be turning me into a cynic. Iâd hoped that I would never get used to all the bad in the world.â
He came up behind her and put a hand on each of her shoulders. âNah, I donât believe that. Youâve just learned not to be overly optimistic.â
âWell, I knew she was trying, beginning to fight it, but I had no idea that it was happening so quickly.â She looked at him thoughtfully as if she were running something through her mind.
âI see that look in your eye, Cecilia. Donât start!â Vince warned her. âCanât you just leave well enough alone and be happy with the results?â
âHow did it happen so quickly?â she asked.
âDoes it really matter?â he countered.
âYour friend have something to do with it?â she asked, beginning to cut the eggs in half.
âJaimer is a good guy, Cecilia. I trust him completely with her.â
âOkay, brother. Just remember you said that.â Cecilia was tempted to mention Jaimer and Tonyaâs intimate relationship. But it wasnât her place to tell him, so she decided to keep it to herself for now.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âNothingânothing at all.â She turned away from him and went back to her task.
âHey, yâall.â Cindy walked slowly into the room with Dayton close behind. Her cheeks were rosy, and her skin glowed.
âHey, girl. How you feeling?â Cecilia asked, bending to kiss her on the cheek.
âIâm fine,â she sighed, rubbing her belly in a circular motion.
âHey, Dayton. How you feeling?â Vince reached over to shake his hand.
âJust tired, man. Between the concerts and the ball games, Iâm running myself ragged trying to make sure everything is covered.â Dayton was the head event coordinator for the Wachovia Center. He was in charge of securing dates for a multiple eventsâconcerts and bas ketball games, as well as special events like wrestling and motor-cross.
âWell, why donât you take a vacation?â
âNah, Iâm going to stick it out until the baby comes and then take a month off to be home.â
âThatâs good. You got the meat already prepped?â
Vince asked, pointing at the tray Dayton was holding. âYeah, my baby was doing it when I came home.â
âYou just getting in?â
âAbout four hours ago. I took a quick nap. Good thing I donât have to work today.
